STELRAD Q&A SESSION ON THE HEATING INTSTALLER AWARDS

As the Heating Installer Awards deadline gets closer, we want to make sure that installers are putting forward their best entry and including all the finishing touches that will impress the judges. We recently sat down with Chris Harvey, Head of Marketing at Stelrad, to discuss what he looks for in an entry, why Stelrad decided to get involved with the awards this year and what advice Chris has for installers. Here’s what he had to say…

1.         Why are you involved in the Heating Installer Awards?

As the leading radiator manufacturer in the UK and a major manufacturer in the heating sector, we’re privileged to know that a huge proportion of heating installers in the country install our radiators on a weekly or even daily basis. So it’s with huge pleasure that we are a lead sponsor of the Heating Installer Awards.

2.            What do you look for in a Heating Installer Awards entry?

Detail, honesty and something ‘different’ – very few people or companies win awards by submitting ‘me too’ type entries. There needs to be a twist, at least one fact that will make your entry stand out from the crowd. Read your entry honestly and ask if you were the judge would you shortlist it for an award… if so, we want you to submit it!

3.            What piece of advice would you give heating installers that are new to the industry?

Winning awards is a great habit to get into. It gives you something to share with potential customers – and will help build credibility in your business. You have to start somewhere. So examine the entry categories and find one that fits your business. Good luck!

4.            Why do you think that heating installers should enter the awards?

It’s strange how some people make fun of awards until they win one! Winning awards is good for the business, good for the people who work with you and can begin to generate media coverage for you in the local press, on local radio and in the trade media. It can also help with recruitment – people like to work for successful businesses. We at Stelrad enter awards on a regular basis for manufacturers and we love winning!

FINAL COUNTDOWN TO ENTER THE HEATING INSTALLER AWARDS

The industry famous Heating Installer Awards is underway, and the countdown is on as entries close on the 8th February.

The scheme calls on tradespeople who go above and beyond for their customers to share their stories, giving installers the chance to show particular standout projects and examples of stellar service.

Sponsored by Danfoss, Geberit, Glow-worm, Polypipe and Stelrad, and media partnered with Installer magazine, the awards are free to enter and offer prizes up to the value of £10,000, including a coveted trip to Danfoss HQ in Denmark, Love2Shop vouchers, an Apple watch, a nextbase 412GW Dash Cam, asbestos training and so much more.

Shaun Scott, Heating Installer Awards winner 2018, spoke about what the awards have done for him and his business. Shaun said: “The awards have massively helped the business, particularly from a customer relationship point of view. People know they will get a good quality of work, they trust me and recommend me. I noticeably get a lot more people approaching me, and a lot more enquiries are converting into business.”

After entries close, the next stage of the competition will involve an expert judging panel, made up of industry professionals, reviewing each entry and deciding 11 regional finalists. The judges’ scores for the finalists will then be carried forward to the next round, which, for the first time, will also include a peer-reviewed, response-to-scenario technical challenge. The finalists’ scores for this, together with a public vote and judges’ scores, will decide the national winner.  The lucky winner will be announced at Installer2019, where 2018 champion, Shaun Scott, from Scotland, will hand over his crown.

The awards offer plumbers the opportunity engage with other plumbers and businesses that they may not previously have had contact with, to receive more business, and give their customers extra assurance through the association with the awards.

HOW THE HEATING INSTALLER AWARDS HAVE CHANGED SHAUN SCOTT

The Heating Installer Awards look to recognise the achievement of plumbers and installers who deliver excellent customer service on a daily basis. As well as recognition, the awards also aim to help heating installers and their businesses, by providing money-can’t-buy prizes, raising their profiles and connecting people within the industry.

We recently had a chat with Shaun Scott, Heating Installer Awards winner 2018, to discuss the awards and what they have done for him and his business. SAFE HEATING FOR HERTFORDSHIRE SCHOOL – COURTESY OF STELRAD LSTs

Stelrad’s LST range of safety radiators has increasingly been specified for school projects up and down the country, to provide the safe heat that public buildings of all types demand. The latest school to install them as part of a refurbishment project is Fearnhill School in Letchworth Garden City, on the Hertfordshire border. The refurbishment project has been undertaken under the watchful eye of Stuart Elwick from Hertfordshire County Council and the team from contractors TeamQ – Project Manager Gregg Pratt and Estimator Mike Dore. Stelrad’s Specification Manager for the region, Chris Bowles was responsible for organising the supply of the radiators for the project via Pipe Centre in Luton.

Fearnhill School is a mixed school set in a leafy part of the county and has over 500 students from the immediate area, including a thriving Sixth Form. As part of the heating system upgrade, it was clear that selecting radiators from Stelrad’s safety range of Low Surface Temperature radiators made huge sense and in all, more than 280 radiators were ordered to share heat in classrooms, corridors and common areas.

Low Surface Temperature radiators are designed to be installed in environments where safety concerns are paramount. It is common to see LST radiators in hospitals, nurseries, schools, retirement homes and care homes. LST radiators by design, are easy to keep clean and reduce potential injuries due to rounded corners and smooth finishes.

“This is another excellent school project and we’re delighted to have our radiators selected for it,” says Stelrad Specification Manager for the region, Chris Bowles. “Our LST range meets the NHS Guidance for ‘safe hot water and surface temperature’ making sure that everyone who is likely to come into contact with them will remain safe. The casings around the radiators are aesthetically pleasing, ensuring that the radiators cannot be tampered with and they provide the radiators with a robust protection that is pretty much as pupil-proof as you can get!”

“Working with Stelrad on the supply of these LST radiators has been very straightforward,” says TeamQ’s Gregg Pratt. “Delivery via our merchant in Luton has been excellent with radiators being delivered as and when we needed them, to allow us to progress the project smoothly from ‘day 1’ without having the whole supply on site, getting in the way of things. It’s been a model for how a project should unfold.”

STELRAD LST i PLUS FOR GROUND BREAKING NEW CARE VILLAGE IN YORK

Stelrad’s LST range of safety radiators that ensure the casings of the radiators do not exceed 43 degrees C have been selected for a number of care and nursing home projects around the UK and Ireland, but the latest project to select these is something rather special.

Few buildings in the city of York are as iconic as the majestic Terry’s Chocolate Works Clock Tower and sitting adjacent to this now is one of the country’s leading luxury care homes, The Chocolate Works Care Village.  Once home to the directors of Terry’s, the beautifully restored former headquarters building now offers a comprehensive range of care options from fully supported luxury care apartments to residential, nursing and dementia care.  The £10 million restoration of this practically derelict, Grade II listed building was the brainchild of Springfield Healthcare Group CEO, Graeme Lee, whose vision of a luxury Care Village for the people of York and the surrounding area has become an awe-inspiring reality. When it is completely let it will provide a quality home for 102 elderly people in stunning surroundings.

The newly refurbished building features 124 Stelrad LST i Plus– Low Surface Temperature  radiators, to provide warmth in the residents’ rooms and in the common areas – the corridors and meeting rooms. The radiators were installed by the M&E contractors for the project, Wheatley Mechanical and Electrical from Garforth, near Leeds.

Low Surface Temperature radiators are designed to be installed in environments where safety concerns are paramount. It is common to see LST radiators in hospitals, nurseries, schools, retirement homes and care homes. LST radiators by design, are easy to keep clean and reduce potential injuries due to rounded corners and smooth finishes.

“This is an impressive project and we’re delighted to have our radiators selected for it,” says Stelrad Specification Manager for the region, Joel Cumberbatch. “Specifiers are increasingly taking a closer look at our range of LST products and deciding they offer the safety levels required when older people are living close to a heating system in their homes or meeting up in public areas. It clearly makes sense to limit the level of heat that can be touched by people in their vicinity and the carefully designed casings around the radiators limit the maximum heat they can come into contact with to no more than 43 degrees C – meeting the NHS Guidance for ‘safe hot water and surface temperature’. These radiators are also finished in antibacterial paint as standard, making them the number one choice for safety critical environments.”

Graeme Lee, Group CEO for Springfield Healthcare Group said: “Everything about the Chocolate Works Care Village is exceptional and that includes the heating system. It’s an older building with high ceilings a major feature of the design, so its vital that we are providing the right level of warmth and comfort for our residents. CHAMPION SHAUN TAKES HIS PRIZE TRIP TO DENMARK

This post is a little different as it comes from our 2018 winner, Shaun Scott. As part of his prize for winning the Heating Installer Awards 2018, Shaun was whisked off to Denmark by our sponsor, Danfoss. Here’s how he got on…

Ever since winning the Heating Installer Awards last year, I’ve been looking forward to the prize from Danfoss. The time finally came on 9th October, when I boarded a plane to Aarhus in North Denmark.

As soon as we landed we headed to Silkeborg to visit the Danfoss factory. At the factory we saw TRVs being produced and packed, ready to be distributed all around  the world! It was great to see the manufacturing process – it was an interesting side to plumbing that I would never have imagined witnessing! After leaving the factory we travelled south for a night in Nordborg, home of Danfoss’ headquarters.

The next morning we got up early and went to the Danfoss headquarters, where we were treated to a historical tour of the Danfoss museum. The museum is the original farm house of Danfoss founder Mads Clausen, who founded the company in 1933, in an office above his mum and dad’s house. It was amazing to see the transition from a family home to the successful company Danfoss is today.

We then headed to the Danfoss owned Science Park, which has been around for over 10 years helping to encourage children and young people to engage in science, technology and entrepreneurship.

After some lovely food and drinks we made the last journey of the trip, south to Hamburg in Germany, before flying home. It was a fantastic trip, we were really well looked after and the whole experience was really incredible from start to finish. When you work with products every day, it’s really interesting to see what they do behind the scenes to manufacture and distribute them. It was a side to the industry I definitely wouldn’t have had the chance to learn about without the Heating Installer Awards. I’ll be disappointed to pass on my crown in May, but I’m excited for the next winner who gets to go on the trip!

So if you want the chance to visit Denmark with Danfoss, make sure you enter the Heating Installer Awards. It was one of the highlights of my career so far and I have the awards and Danfoss to thank for that!

TOP TIPS FOR COPING WITH WEATHER CHANGES

It happens every year, yet somehow it always seems to come as a little bit of a shock! The nights start to draw in and we wake up when it’s still dark. There’s lots of advice out there on how to keep houses warm and fashion tips on how to look great in the cold, but here at the Heating Installer Awards we like to look out for our own! And after last year’s bitingly cold beast from the east that lasted well into spring, we think that it’s important to prepare for what might come this year:

  1. Make sure that your vehicle is prepared for the change in weather because breaking down in the cold is enough to ruin anyone’s day. Make sure you check tyre treads regularly, as well as test your tyre pressures, and monitor oil and water levels – all the activities we love to say ‘I’ll do that next week’ about! As well as this, it’s a good idea to always keep some de-icer, an ice scraper and a blanket in your van, then at least if you do happen to breakdown or get stuck in bad weather, you’re prepared.
  2. On this note, make sure you’ve got a good breakdown policy in place, just in case. No one wants to be stood on the roadside in the middle of winter for any longer than necessary – especially when there’s a job to get to!
  3. Working in winter can be chilly; especially for you guys who are likely to be working on a project where you’re installing/fixing a heating system, meaning the house or building is probably cold. So make sure you invest in the right clothing. Look out for affordable winter clothing in the sales, such as insulated and waterproof trousers and jackets, and some top quality thermals and fleeces. Some heavy duty, sturdy winter boots will also come in handy, as well as some anti-slip gloves for working in the rain or snow. Helmet liners are also a great way to keep your head and neck warm.
  4. With the the clocks going back, the evenings will start getting darker even earlier now, so remember to factor in shorter days to your work schedule if you will need natural light to complete a job.
  5. Finally, you never know if a customer will offer to put the kettle on, so make sure you get yourself a good flask. Nothing beats a hot cup of tea or coffee!

As the saying goes, failing to prepare is preparing to fail. But that’s why you’re reading this, to prepare! So make sure you follow up on this advice and keep warm this winter.

Following hundreds of entries, a scrupulous judging panel and huge public vote, the winner of the UK’s Heating Installer Awards 2018 has been decided.

Shaun Scott of Derek Scott Plumbing and Heating, was announced as the national winner during a special presentation at industry trade show, Installer2018, on 9th May 2018. Representing Scotland and already a brand ambassador for the plumbing and heating industry, Shaun is currently the face of WaterSafe and has recently worked to highlight awareness surrounding the use of lead within the industry. Shaun was closely followed by the national runner up, Huw Jenkins of Wales.

Sponsored by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Danfoss, Polypipe, Sentinel, Vaillant UK, Wolseley, Avanti Gas and Installer Magazine, the awards recognises heating installers that go above and beyond the call of duty. The award scheme runs annually to create a positive talking point in the industry, working to promote the excellent customer service delivered by heating installers which can often go unrecognised.

Speaking of his new title as the UK’s Heating Installer Awards winner 2018, Shaun said: “It feels great to be awarded Heating Installer Awards winner 2018. It’s amazing to get recognition for hard work and effort. I go into my job everyday to help people out, but this isn’t just for me – it’s for all the loyal customers that have looked after me as much as I’ve looked after them over the years.”

Nominations for the Heating Installer Awards 2018 opened in October 2017, asking installers, homeowners and customers to submit exemplary examples of work over the past 12 months.

A panel of industry experts then met to shortlist nine regional winners, with the shortlist going to a public vote. Thousands of votes were cast, with Shaun crowned the overall winner.
