Stelrad’s LST range of safety radiators has increasingly been specified for school projects up and down the country, to provide the safe heat that public buildings of all types demand. The latest school to install them as part of a refurbishment project is Fearnhill School in Letchworth Garden City, on the Hertfordshire border. The refurbishment project has been undertaken under the watchful eye of Stuart Elwick from Hertfordshire County Council and the team from contractors TeamQ – Project Manager Gregg Pratt and Estimator Mike Dore. Stelrad’s Specification Manager for the region, Chris Bowles was responsible for organising the supply of the radiators for the project via Pipe Centre in Luton.

Fearnhill School is a mixed school set in a leafy part of the county and has over 500 students from the immediate area, including a thriving Sixth Form. As part of the heating system upgrade, it was clear that selecting radiators from Stelrad’s safety range of Low Surface Temperature radiators made huge sense and in all, more than 280 radiators were ordered to share heat in classrooms, corridors and common areas.

Low Surface Temperature radiators are designed to be installed in environments where safety concerns are paramount. It is common to see LST radiators in hospitals, nurseries, schools, retirement homes and care homes. LST radiators by design, are easy to keep clean and reduce potential injuries due to rounded corners and smooth finishes.

“This is another excellent school project and we’re delighted to have our radiators selected for it,” says Stelrad Specification Manager for the region, Chris Bowles. “Our LST range meets the NHS Guidance for ‘safe hot water and surface temperature’ making sure that everyone who is likely to come into contact with them will remain safe. The casings around the radiators are aesthetically pleasing, ensuring that the radiators cannot be tampered with and they provide the radiators with a robust protection that is pretty much as pupil-proof as you can get!”

“Working with Stelrad on the supply of these LST radiators has been very straightforward,” says TeamQ’s Gregg Pratt. “Delivery via our merchant in Luton has been excellent with radiators being delivered as and when we needed them, to allow us to progress the project smoothly from ‘day 1’ without having the whole supply on site, getting in the way of things. It’s been a model for how a project should unfold.”

Polypipe launches Single Zone Electric Boiler for standalone projects

By | Sponsor News | No Comments

Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of underfloor heating systems, has launched the Single Zone Electric Boiler. The new boiler removes the need for single room underfloor heating applications to be plumbed into the existing home heating system, providing an easier way for installers to fit underfloor heating systems into new extensions or conversions.

The new boiler offers a solution for smaller, standalone projects where it would be impractical to plumb into a main system. The unit is designed to provide a completely self-sufficient underfloor heating solution for a range of projects, from standard applications such as bathroom conversions, kitchens and extensions, through to more unusual uses such as garden buildings, log cabins, or loft conversions.

For the installer, the Single Zone Electric Boiler has been designed with speed and ease of installation in mind. The compact unit is a ‘one box solution’ which includes all the components required to run underfloor heating, and comes complete with simple push-fit connections, and fill and drain ports.

The 3kw boiler can supply the hot water to service Polypipe Underfloor Heating systems installed in an area of up to 38m2 (based on a requirement of 80w/m2) with a temperature range of between 24° and 56°, offering improved efficiency over an equivalent radiator system. The boiler’s compact design ensures that it can be accommodated into smaller areas, helping to maximise space while providing a more even and comfortable heat than radiators.

The boiler also enhances energy efficiency for the end user. Electric underfloor heating systems have historically been a strong option for one-off or single area projects, however as they remain independent to other heating systems, when the underfloor heating is on the electricity is constantly in use, meaning that they can be costly to run.

However, the Single Zone Electric Boiler initially draws on the homeowner’s electricity to heat up the required water, and once the water is circulating through the system, the boiler only draws electricity intermittently to maintain the temperature. Overall, this offers significant cost and efficiency savings compared to a full electric underfloor heating system.

The Single Zone Electric Boiler holds British Standards Kitemark (KM 59690) and conforms to all relevant BSI and European directives.

Andy Coy, Underfloor Heating Product Manager at Polypipe, says:

“Many homeowners are choosing to renovate and extend their existing property rather than move. We wanted to provide installers with a product that could deliver an efficient underfloor heating solution to this consumer market, for when plumbing into the existing heating system proves problematic. We also specifically chose a 3kw output, as this means the unit can still be powered from a domestic socket, removing the expense and time of electrical alterations.”

Inside the Single Zone Electric Boiler

  • Filling connections
  • Air vent

The electric boiler features:

  • Simple wiring to standard 13amp connection
  • Simple push-fit pipe connections
  • A temperature range from 24º to 56° – ideal for UFH
  • Compatibility with Polypipe’s standard controls

Our favourite ad campaign of 2017

By | Sponsor News | No Comments

What do we want from an ad? For it to be entertaining? Tongue in cheek? Informative?

Sentinel managed to be all three in their ‘Think Dirty’ campaign, which is why we’ve named it out favourite campaign of 2017.

You’ll all have seen it: the neon lights and suggestive text, encouraging heating and plumbing engineers to ‘think dirty’ on the job. Supported by boiler manufacturers, merchants and industry bodies, Sentinel’s tongue-in-cheek ‘Think Dirty’ campaign aims to raise awareness around the issue of dirty circulating water, and help installers to deliver best practice cleaning as quickly and as easily as possible through the selection of suitable cleaning chemicals.

If a boiler suffers from dirty circulating water, it can experience pin-hole corrosion and component failure, radiator cold spots, excessive energy consumption, low heat output and loss of boiler warranty – all of which can result in unhappy customers, call-backs, complaints and loss of business for installers.

Sentinel’s range of products can prevent all of these issues, resulting in a happy boiler, happy customer and happy installer. The campaign focuses on three products specifically:

X300 – the cleaner for new systems

X800 – the fast-acting cleaner

X400 – the high-performance cleaner

We have it on good authority that there is more to come from Sentinel’s ‘Think Dirty’ campaign, so follow @SentinelHQ to keep up to date.

Wolseley launches new customer feedback system – ‘Tell Wolseley’

By | Sponsor News | 9 Comments

Wolseley has launched a new customer feedback system to improve the overall customer experience across the Wolseley UK-wide branch network.

Today Wolseley operates Plumb, Parts, Drain, Pipe and Climate Center as separate businesses. It is working towards bringing every part of those businesses together to form one specialist trade merchant called Wolseley.

‘Tell Wolseley’ is an anonymous customer feedback service, available 24/7 for Wolseley customers to share their branch experiences via a short online survey on their smart phone. Each time a customer provides feedback, they are given the opportunity to enter a monthly prize draw to win one of three £100 Love2Shop vouchers. Feedback provided is used to improve the overall experience on a local and national level.

Delivering great customer service is a number one priority for all branch teams as well as the Wolseley business as a whole. By completing the survey, branches receive instant feedback so they can work on understanding what or who, makes their branch so great, or in some cases, what makes them miss the mark.

Hannah Foley at Wolseley said: “It is important we receive honest feedback from our customers to ensure the right things continue to be done well, and the not-so-good things, done better. We want to know what our customers think and all feedback, both positive and negative, is acted upon and directed to the local management teams to review.

“One of the best bits of customer feedback is hearing which members of our team have given great service so that we can give them a well-deserved pat on the back! The survey takes a couple minutes to complete, and can be done during a quick tea break, all you need is a charge note number from your most recent transaction.”

Polypipe Underfloor Heating warms up stylish Sussex residential development

By | Sponsor News | One Comment

When four new build properties in Horsham, Sussex, required a sophisticated heating system that could deliver comfortable temperatures throughout the home without compromising on style, installer AG Pearce chose underfloor heating experts Polypipe to provide an efficient solution.

The Woodland Park residential development recently added four new build detached properties to the site. Polypipe’s Red Panel solid floor system was installed throughout the ground floor in each of the four houses. The Red Panel system provides several benefits to installers, featuring unique castellations which act as a guide to make installation quick and easy, and guarantee the pipe is laid at regular intervals for an even heat distribution. The panels also feature raised sections to lift the pipe up off the insulation and allow the screed to fully envelop the pipe and better transmit the heat into the room. The castellations also reduce the amount of screed required by approximately 15%, saving valuable time and money on the project.

Using the Red Panel system ensures that installers can deliver a heating system that provides a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout the property, while also providing design freedom by removing the need for bulky wall based heating systems like radiators.

On the first floors, Polypipe’s OverlayTM Lite system was used. This is the lightweight version of our retrofit OverlayTM system, which is used in conjunction with lightweight floor coverings such as carpet, vinyl and laminate. Measuring just 18mm in depth, the OverlayTM Lite system is installed directly on top of the existing floor, making it the ideal system for upper floors which are not being screeded.

The underfloor heating systems were paired with Polypipe’s Smart Plus controls, offering the homeowners complete control over the heating of their home from stylish touchscreen wall-mounted thermostats and away from home using their mobile devices. Available in a range of colours and featuring a host of additional features, the Smart Plus controls offered yet another practical, yet design focused feature to complete these stylish new homes.

Wolseley Plumb Center announces top Zombie Boiler hunter

By | Sponsor News | No Comments

Wolseley Plumb Center has announced London Gas Services as the winner of its 2017 Zombie Boiler competition.

Zombie Boilers were being targeted by the plumbing and heating specialist during October to raise awareness of inefficient boilers and their costs to homeowners, as well as the effects they can have on the environment.

Taking out the warming dead with the most zombie boiler slays, London Gas Services has won four tickets to its very own Zombie Infection experience. Their chosen team will be tasked with exterminating a zombie apocalypse using only instinct and intellect for survival.

On winning the competition, Gary Mellor from London Gas Services commented: ““It’s great that we’ve won, we can’t wait to take down some real(ish) zombies!

“We come across far too many Zombie Boilers on jobs and think it’s really important the public and my customers understand why sometimes it’s better to replace rather than repair – ignoring an inefficient boiler will only lead to further problems down the line including costly breakdowns, higher energy bills as well as polluting the atmosphere.”

As well as the overall top Zombie Boiler hunter of the year, Drew Styles from Styles Plumbing, recently crowned Plumber of the Year also won the runners up prize for getting the most retweets of his slays, winning some workwear to ensure he is well equipped for a day’s hard work.

Wolseley Category Director Heating and Renewables Richard Harvey said: “We want to support heating engineers and UK homeowners to get rid of these old and decrepit boilers. Whilst they might look like ok from the outside, inefficient boilers emit harmful emissions, burn cash sending bills rocketing, and risk breakdowns which is a big inconvenience with the colder months approaching.

He went on to say: “The subject of inefficient boilers and the threat they pose is being talked about more and more within the industry. To see so many Zombie Boiler entries from installers across the UK is fantastic and we hope to see even more wiped out until they’re gone for good!”

To enter the competition, installers had to tweet @PlumbcenterUK photos of boiler horrors they put to rest using the #ZombieBoiler hashtag. All entries were added to a top zombie hunter leader board where installers would receive one point for all entries submitted, and a bonus point for any retweets.
