Danfoss wins prestigious H&V News award

Posted on:

The Danfoss RAS-B2 Dynamic Valve has won HVAC Product of the Year in the Components and Peripherals category at the H&V News Awards 2021. Danfoss scooped the top prize for its acclaimed technical innovation which, unlike standard TRVs, features a differential pressure controller for fast and easy hydronic dynamic balancing of domestic heating systems in a fraction of the time it would normally take. The expert judging panel, drawn from across the HVAC sector, praised the new Danfoss product for offering installers a practical solution that will help them accurately deliver a balanced system and will help consumers with long-term maintenance of efficiency and comfort.

Currently the only 100% pressure independent valve demonstrating a constant flow in all conditions, the award-winning Danfoss RAS-B2 ensures each radiator receives an equal flow of hot water. This not only optimises end-user comfort but also means that the return temperature is lower (condensing boiler efficiency is best at below a return temperature of 55o C) and the pump can run at a lower speed. Furthermore, pre-setting of the desired flow is done on the valve, rather than on the lockshield, which it is estimated could save installers up to two hours of valuable working time. In addition, the RAS-B2 is featured on the Danfoss Installer App: using this time-saving tool installers can calculate, record and document the correct flow and subsequent setting for each radiator on their smartphone or tablet.

Speaking on behalf of Danfoss, Marketing Manager, Gareth Ash, said: “We are absolutely delighted to win a coveted H&V News Award for our RAS-B2 Dynamic Valve. Danfoss invented the world’s first radiator thermostat back in 1943 and as this latest innovation shows we are still leading the way when it comes to developing cutting-edge solutions that make life easier for installers, deliver real benefits for their customers and will contribute to making UK homes more energy efficient as we journey towards the ultimate goal of Net Zero.”

The winners of the H&V News Awards 2021 were revealed on the 11 November at the Hilton Park Lane, London. The glittering night of recognition and celebration of the sector’s achievements saw the HVAC industry elite come together in person for the first time since April 2019. With 25 categories, the H&V News Awards recognise the leading people, products, projects and services from across the industry and are amongst the most sought-after accolades in the HVAC sector.

Heating Installer Awards launches for the seventh year!

Posted on:

Entries are now open for the industry famous Heating Installer Awards, which is returning for a seventh year as the competition once again searches for the best heating installers in the UK. Designed to champion the heroes of the industry who often go unnoticed, the awards recognise installers who go to great lengths to deliver incredible levels of service and the highest quality installations for their customers.

Supported by Armacell, Danfoss, CIPHE, LG, Polypipe and Stelrad, the awards are completely free to enter and give installers the chance to showcase their work to potential customers. There is a prize bundle worth over £10,000 on offer for the finalists, including a toolkit worth £600 and money-can’t-buy prizes from the award’s sponsors.

This year, the awards will once again recognise winners from each region across the UK, who will then all have the chance to go on to be crowned the National Heating Installer Awards winner 2022, as well as two special category winners: Rising Star, for the industry’s best apprentices, and Most Sustainable Installer, which recognises those who are doing everything they can to minimise the impact of their work on the environment.

After entries close in February, an expert judging panel made up of industry professionals and installers will choose the regional finalists as well as an initial shortlist for the two categories. The overall winners will then be decided by a combination of judges’ scores, peer reviewed technical challenges and a public vote, with the two category winners plus the national winner and runner up announced in June at the NEC.

We caught up with our National Winner 2021, Grant Gundelfinger

Posted on:

It was third time lucky for Leeds-based Grant Gundelfinger, who scooped the national title at this year’s Heating Installer Awards 2021.

Grant, who is a director of Mayfly Group Ltd, scooped the Heating Installer Awards’ Yorkshire regional title back in May after our judging panel of leading industry experts whittled down hundreds of outstanding entries to just nine UK-wide regional winners. Grant impressed the judges and the public with his technical expertise, outstanding professionalism and commitment to the industry and his customers. He was crowned the National Heating Installer Awards winner at this year’s InstallerSHOW at the Coventry Building Society Arena following a technical challenge and a public online vote.

Grant is no stranger to the awards. He has claimed the Yorkshire regional title three years in a row now and was pipped at the post to the top national award in 2019 when he was named as national runner up.  It’s clear that he takes great pride in his work, something which is recognised by his company and its many customers.

We sat down with Grant to talk all about his win, what he has been up to since the show and advice he has for those hoping to be crowned National Heating Installer Winner 2022!

  1. Tell me about what you’re up to at the moment

We are back to work and busy as ever! The Heating Installer Awards feels like a dream now, but we have some really exciting projects coming up which are keeping us busy.

We are also recruiting! Looking for a high-quality heating installer takes time, but I am looking forward to welcoming a new member of the team before the year is out.

I also just did my interview with FIX radio all about the awards which was really great and I loved discussing my big win, the work I have been doing, and the future of the industry.

  1. What benefits have you seen since winning the Heating Installer Awards 2021?

Winning the Heating Installer Awards has been an absolute dream come true for me, as everyone knows! Since I have won, I have been approached by a variety of brands, however, I won’t endorse products my team and I would not work with on a job. I want people who follow me on social media to know that anything I promote I am genuinely passionate about and feel will greatly benefit another installer’s experience when using.

Winning the award has helped us to gain recognition both locally and in the wider area. If a homeowner is looking for an installer of the highest standard, we are able to show that we have won the pinnacle of accolades within the sector, which is a huge plus.

Apart from that is has just been lovely to receive such positive comments of congratulations from my colleagues, peers and customers. The support I received was overwhelming and I am still on such a high!

  1. What are your plans for the future?

I am really passionate about improving the industry, and to do that we must all share our knowledge and expertise and support one another in order to become to best we can be.

  1. What products could you not live without on a job and why?

Two products I absolutely cannot live without are my Bahco wide jaw spanners and my Pica pencil. Both are so reliable; no other brands make products like these and I can recommend them without a doubt.

  1. What advice do you have for anyone entering next year’s Heating Installer Awards 2022?

Do your very best. The winner of the Heating Installer Awards has to be someone who is consistently producing high quality work: think about a project you put your heart and soul into and really sets you apart from the rest and then take your time when writing your entry – and don’t leave any detail out no matter how small. The judges are looking for someone who really knows their stuff! Give it your all, you won’t regret it. I’ve had an absolute ball this year.

  1. Anything else you’d like to add?

Just a huge thank you to everyone who supported, voted and congratulated me throughout the awards. Thanks to my amazing team at the Mayfly Group – without them none of this would be possible. I look forward to seeing next year’s finalists and attending the show next year to crown the 2022 winner!

Keep up with Grant on social media!

We caught up with our Rising Star Winner 2021, Carl Ladd

Posted on:

After facing off against tough competition, Carl Ladd, was announced this year’s Rising Star winner at the Heating Installer Awards 2021.

Carl entered the awards earlier on in the year after hearing about it on social media. When the judges reviewed his entry, they were particularly impressed with his commitment to learning and his positive approach, particularly as he switched to a plumbing and heating career after suffering a serious hand injury in an accident.

We sat down with Carl to catch up on what he’s been up to since winning the Rising Star award and what his plans are for the future.

  1. Tell us about what you’re up to at the moment

I am really busy at the moment working on various projects whilst continuing to complete my apprenticeship. On top of that, I am also continuing to run the Apprentice Foundation which I set up a couple of years ago, and we have some exciting projects in the pipeline… watch this space!

  1. What benefits have you seen since being shortlisted and then winning the Rising Star Awards 2021?

I have received loads of support on social media from fellow plumbers. The plumbing and heating installer community on Instagram is a really positive and supportive place to be.

I have often taken advice from installers on Instagram and they really inspire me, whether it’s a ‘how to’ video or a product recommendation post, there is loads we can learn from each other.

When it was announced that I had been shortlisted, I received numerous messages of support from really influential people in the industry wishing me luck and commenting on the standard of my work. To be at the awards ceremony with the highest level of talent in the country, whilst surrounded by sponsors from some of the biggest industry names, was really surreal.

I also received some really positive and valuable feedback from the sponsors at the awards which really boosted my confidence. When you have such big brands congratulating you on the standard of your entry it is very humbling.

  1. What are your plans for the future?

The main plan is to complete my apprenticeship! I am looking forward to learning as much as much as I can and continue to grow my knowledge across the sector and take on some more complex and exciting jobs!

  1. What products could you not live without on a job and why?

I absolutely love Milwaukee Tools. For me, they are absolutely the highest standard on the market, they are really powerful and reliable. It makes life so much easier when you work with tools that never let you down on a job.

As I continue my apprenticeship, I am looking forward to working with more brands and finding new amazing tools to add to my collection.

  1. What advice do you have for anyone entering next year’s Heating Installer Awards 2022?

My biggest piece of advice is to commit to the process. The Heating Installer Awards is no joke, you are going up against some of the biggest names in the industry and the sponsors will be watching you.

It takes a certain amount of time and you have to be comfortable showing off your practical and theoretical knowledge. Don’t worry about the public vote as much, having a huge social media following doesn’t matter as it is only one area of the scoring. It’s all about the quality of work, your knowledge, and your commitment to the trade.

Throw yourself in and you won’t regret it, it will help you to build relationships with some top players and brands in the industry and it’s also a great laugh! I made some great friendships with the others who had been shortlisted and it was amazing to be able to celebrate our work after a really difficult 18 months.

  1. Anything else you’d like to add?

I would just like to again say a massive thank you to everyone  who has supported me throughout this process. I am truly honoured to have won this award. Plumbing and heating has become a real passion for me and winning the Rising Star award against incredibly talented competition has just highlighted that I am on the right track.

Yorkshire’s Grant Gundelfinger Takes Top Spot at National Heating Installer Awards 2021

Posted on:

Following hundreds of entries, a judging day where a panel of industry experts shortlisted the entries, a peer-reviewed technical challenge and a record number of public votes, the winners of the Heating Installer Awards 2021 have been announced.

Grant Gundelfinger, of Mayfly Group Ltd, fought off strong competition to be crowned as the national Heating Installer 2021. Grant impressed the judges and the public with his high level of technicality, outstanding professionalism and commitment to the industry and his customers.

This is the third year Grant has excelled at the awards.  He won the Yorkshire regional title in both 2019 and 2020 and was national runner up in 2019.

Grant said: “It’s the third year that I’ve been recognised as the best Heating Installer in Yorkshire, and I’m so proud to have won the overall national award. To be honoured by your peers as well as some of the biggest names in the industry is incredibly gratifying and I am so thankful for this recognition. I have seen how winning the award has boosted previous winner’s careers, and I cannot wait to see what is in store for the future. It’s even better that my family was here to see this too.”

Paul Clark of Concept Plumbing and Heating, from Hoylake on the Wirral, saw off stiff competition from installers across the UK to claim the coveted runner-up spot in the prestigious awards scheme which recognises the nation’s best heating installers.

Carl Ladd from Leamington Spa scooped the Rising Star award which recognises the industry’s budding apprentices.  Carl, who started his plumbing career after severely crushing his hand in an accident, impressed the judges with his level of commitment and desire to achieve high standards. Although he’s still training, Carl has also set up the Apprentice Foundation which aims to connect full-time learners with employers looking to take on apprentices.

Last but by no means least, the Most Sustainable Installer Award, which recognises those who are doing everything they can to minimise the impact of their work on the environment, went to Benjamin Lee from B LEE Plumbing and Heating in Salcombe, Devon. Benjamin impressed the judges with his commitment to providing sustainable products, processes and solutions to his customers.

Now in its sixth year, the Heating Installer Awards celebrates the achievements and the credibility of plumbers and heating installers who deliver an excellent quality of work and customer service on a daily basis and showcases the superstars of the industry who have gone unnoticed, until today.

Now that Grant has won the title he can enjoy industry-wide recognition and prizes provided by awards partners which include a trip to Denmark to Danfoss’ headquarters, a top-of-the-range LG TV and a large amount of product from Armacell and Polypipe.

The judges commented that the quality of this year’s entries from across the UK was exceptional and included an increasingly outstanding quality of projects.

Readdressing the Gender Balance in the Heating and Plumbing Sector: What’s Being Done?

To be exact, fewer than 1 in 100 heating installers are predicted to be women – data from 2019 found that 0.6% of registered gas engineers were female. We’d put money on that figure not having changed much over the past couple of years.

We’ll start by saying that we know that gender is only one aspect of diversity that needs addressing in the sector, and we’re not trying to wash over other elements such as age, ethnicity, neurodiversity and ability. However, being a team of predominantly women (not to forget a couple of brilliant men!) running the Heating Installer Awards, we think it’s a good place to start. So, we did some digging and had a chat to a few people in the industry about how we can start readdressing the balance.

Why is gender diversity such a challenge?

First things first: why the challenge?

There are loads of reasons gender balance is so off in the sector, starting with traditional gender stereotypes and biases still being prominent in society at large – albeit with significant improvements made over the past couple of decades. Popular culture has traditionally, and still does, play a huge part here by conditioning us to believe there’s a ‘norm’ when it comes to the sorts of roles we think we ‘should’ be going into.

In some cases, this can also transfer over into education and the careers advice young people are getting. That’s not to knock schools and colleges, as some of them are doing some brilliant work to change this, but we’re still not quite there when it comes to education professionals pointing enough females down the path of becoming a tradesperson.

Another one to add to this list is the unsocial hours that often come with being on the tools, meaning that it simply isn’t appropriate for some women. That said, being a self-employed installer can mean benefitting from flexible hours in many cases, so those wanting flexibility shouldn’t rule it out.

Who’s working to change things?

Thankfully, there are lots of great groups and organisations working hard to promote opportunities and encourage more females to consider a role in the sector – some of which we’ve covered below.

Community groups

Stopcocks Women Plumbers are doing a great job of making waves here. Their annual Women Installers Together conference is growing each year, with founder Hattie Hasan MBE saying last year: “We’re really delighted the event is growing every year. With the average age of plumbers 57.5, the workforce is going to reduce drastically in a few years. Women are very keen to come into it. This needs to be encouraged by all sectors of the industry by showing them how welcome they are. We sincerely believe that the changes that will attract more women will also attract more men into heating and plumbing; that’s good for everyone.”

We’re also really impressed with Stopcock’s latest initiative – the National Register of Tradeswomen, set to launch in March. The aim of the register is to ensure that people who feel more comfortable using female tradespeople are able to find them easily. We reckon this sort of initiative will help the sector become more appealing to women, by showing that being a tradesperson is a viable career path for those wanting to take it.

The media + social media

Parts of the media are also playing a big part in getting messages around gender balance and diversity out to the masses. For example, trade publications Installer, HPV magazine and PHPI are just some of those putting out good content that openly encourages discussion around the topic.

We also thought it was quickly worth mentioning the part social media now has to play in promoting the stories of a more diverse set of tradespeople. For example, EKRB Developments – or @plasteredsisters as they’re known on Instagram – are a sister-in-law duo that spent their maternity leaves learning how to plaster. They’ve since been spreading the positive message of female trades to over 15,000 followers. We hope that this will be a platform that does more for encouraging diversity in the sector moving forward!

Apprenticeship providers

As we said earlier, education might not be quite where we want it to be when it comes to inclusively promoting trade-focused roles, however, apprenticeships are certainly making roles more recognised and accessible.

On the Tools put out a great video last week as part of National Apprenticeship Week, discussing the viability of apprenticeships in the trade sector. Apprentice bricklayer, Beth, took part in the video to discuss her apprenticeship. One of the things she mentioned was that there isn’t enough support in general for people that want to get into trades, due to a lack of information, so more support is needed here. We hope to see more stories coming from female trade apprentices moving forward, so young women have female role models to look up to and learn from.

Case study: Laura’s story

Our partner Danfoss also invited us to chat to Laura, one of its graduate area sales managers, as part of this piece. While Laura isn’t an installer, she is breaking down boundaries and excelling in a traditionally male-dominated sector. As part of her role, she chats with thousands of installers in Danfoss’ merchants across Scotland, and her experience echoes the stats we shared earlier – Laura reckons that less than 1% of the installers she deals with are females.

That’s not to say she finds the sector unwelcoming – quite the opposite in fact. While she says the sector is viewed as more male dominated, she’s not had any issues and loves her role.  Laura told me that females can sometimes be put off, as it can sometimes feel like a ‘boys’ game’. Yet, she’s always felt really welcomed. She was also quick to comment that a lot the installers she chats to genuinely are keen to have more women in the sector.

When we asked for her advice for other females thinking about entering the sector, she said ‘jump in, be yourself and have confidence; hold your own and don’t feel that you need to change to try and fit in’. We salute that!

Women installers: we need you!

We wanted to end this blog by saying that us writing this is by no means a dig at the males working in the sector – we speak to hundreds of you each year for the awards, and hugely value your contributions to a sector we’re so passionate about! We’re all about getting the conversation going and working together to make the sector accessible to all – regardless of gender, age, race or ability.

Do you have experience working as a female in the sector, or know someone that does? If so, we’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line on Twitter @HIAwards.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Heating Installer Awards New Date Announced

Posted on:

The Heating Installer Awards has announced it has extended its deadline by six weeks, giving installers until 21st March 2021 to get their entries in. The regional winners will now be announced in May, with the national winner and category winners announced a little later than planned at InstallerShow in September, following the postponement of the show due to the pandemic.

The Heating Installer Awards is an annual programme now in its sixth year which recognises installers who go to great lengths to deliver incredible levels of service and the highest quality installations for their customers. For those working in the industry, the past 12 months have been challenging to say the least, so it’s more important than ever to take time to celebrate and champion the heroes of the industry who often go unnoticed.

Supported by leading organisations from across the sector including Armacell, Danfoss, LG, Polypipe and CIHPE, the awards are completely free to enter and give installers the chance to showcase their work to potential customers. There is a prize bundle worth over £10,000 on offer for the finalists, including product and a trip to Denmark for the national winner.

The first round sees the awards recognise nine regional winners, who are chosen anonymously by an expert judging panel made up of industry professionals and installers. These finalists then all have the chance to go on to be crowned the national Heating Installer Awards winner 2021. There are also two special categories to enter:

  • Rising Star– especially for the industry’s budding apprentices – and;
  • Most Sustainable Installer– to recognise those who are doing everything they can to minimise the impact of their work on the environment

The overall winner for the national awards as well as the two categories are decided by a combination of judges’ scores, peer reviewed technical challenges and a public vote, with the results announced live in September at InstallerShow in Birmingham.

To enter for free, plumbers and heating installers should visit www.heatinginstallerawards.co.uk/enter and fill in the short entry form. Or if you prefer, give the awards team a call on 0161 871 1188 and they’d be happy to take your entry over the phone.

We chatted to some of the previous HIA winners about van theft: here’s what they said…

Posted on:

Thanks to the hard work of Heating Installer Awards 2017 winner, Peter Booth – along with other industry bodies and professionals – the devastating impact of van and tool theft has been highlighted by tradespeople, politicians and even national celebrities over the past few years. But despite campaigning, no one can completely remove the chances of falling victim to van thieves. There are however some things we can all do to reduce the chance. As part of this year’s #NoVANber, we’ve looked at different ways you can help reduce van theft, with help from some of the Heating Installer Awards previous winners!

Whilst for some it’s enough to just “not leave you van unlocked” (cheers for that one Matthew Stoves, HIA2020 North East regional winner,) as well as not leaving valuables/tools on show or in your van overnight, here are some tips for when that just isn’t enough.

Think about where you park

The simplest but also an effective and often overlooked deterrent is where you park your van. We know that in some situations you don’t have much of a choice over where you’re able to park, especially if space is limited when you’re on a job. But, if you do have the option, try to park in view of security cameras or in busy areas and popular streets, as this can put off many van thieves. Other tips on how clever parking can deter van theft from our previous winners include:

“Always try and park in a well-lit area. Increasing the risk of being caught, it may put off thieves from targeting your van.” Phil Metcalf, HIA 2020 winner.

“Park with your van doors against a van or hedge, trying to make it as inconvenient as possible for the thief so that they just drive past.”- Todd Glister, HIA2020 national runner up

Add extra security

According to a recent What Car? Vans survey, only 58% of vans are fitted with an alarm as standard. An alarm can stop a van thief in their tracks, so make sure you check that your van has one and if not, it may be worth investing in one.

Increasing the number of locking mechanisms on your van, and using higher-security ones, can also prevent thieves from entering. Investing in high quality locks can also help reduce your insurance premiums too!

This one might sound a bit old school but steering wheel locks are a great (and cheap) way of deterring thieves, as something as simple as these make it more difficult for them to steal your van.  They may also make van thieves think you have other security measures in place, meaning it’s not worth their time!

On the topic of security, here’s some further tips from Todd:

“Installing hooked dead locks for both the top and bottom of your doors will make a huge difference.” – Todd Glister

“Having extra metal over the wires which control the central locking can stop thieves, as well as moving the OBD (on board diagnostics) port into a safety deposit box inside your van.” – Todd Glister

Become more tech savvy

Nowadays, there’s loads of technology out there that can make it harder for thieves to steal your van and its contents, such as, apps, trackers and personal visual surveillance. Investing in tech to safeguard your gear doesn’t have to be expensive either:

“Park your van in view of a doorbell camera like Ring. This is a great alternative to installing CCTV which is often expensive, as the doorbell is motion sensitive and will notify you if anyone is lingering around your van when it’s parked up.”- Daljit Singh Rasouda, HIA2020 Midlands regional winner.

There are also products with apps that you can download, which will make you aware of van thefts in your local area in real time:

Van Mate, is a great alarm system which alerts you via an app when vans in your area have been broken into.” – Todd Glister

In the unfortunate event that your van is stolen, trackers can help, as Stuart explains:

“Installing trackers can be helpful in the event that thieves drive off with your van as it can help law enforcement to identify its location and retrieve it.” – Stuart Sugden, HIA2020 Scotland & NI regional winner

Don’t forget your keys!

It’s a trick as old as time but believe it or not, some thieves still use the old coat hanger through the letter box trick! Never leave your keys or other valuables in reach of your front door. If possible, keeping them in a locked box away from any openings to your home to ensure opportunists can’t get their mitts on them.

Personalise your tools and van

Printing your business name on your van as well as on your tools can also deter thieves as this will significantly reduce the resale price of expensive power tools. Also, who doesn’t love a personalised power tool?!

We hope these tips were useful! Do you have a tip to prevent van theft that you think people should know about? Comment below!

HEATING INSTALLER AWARDS ARE OUT OF LOCKDOWN AND BACK FOR SIXTH YEAR

Posted on:

Entries are now open for the industry famous Heating Installer Awards, which has returned for a sixth year as the competition once again searches for the best plumbing and heating installers in the UK. For those working in the industry, this year has been challenging to say the least, with many of you continuing to provide vital services throughout lockdown. It’s true when people say that ‘not all superheroes wear capes’ so it’s more important than ever to take time to celebrate your hard work and dedication over the past 12 months, and champion the heroes of the industry who often go unnoticed.

The awards recognise installers who go to great lengths to deliver incredible levels of service and the highest quality installations for their customers. Supported by Danfoss, LG, Polypipe, CIHPE and Installer, the awards are completely free to enter and give installers the chance to showcase their work to potential customers. There is a prize bundle worth over £10,000 on offer for the finalists, including a trip to Denmark for the national winner, and what’s more, the first 20 installers to enter will bag themselves an early bird prize bundle courtesy of Polypipe!

This year, the awards will once again recognise nine regional winners, who will then all have the chance to go on to be crowned the National Heating Installer Awards winner 2021, as well as two special category winners:

  • Rising Star– especially for the industry’s budding apprentices – and;
  • Most Sustainable Installer– to recognise those who are doing everything they can to minimise the impact of their work on the environment

After entries close in February, an expert judging panel made up of industry professionals and installers will choose nine regional finalists as well as an initial shortlist for the two categories. The overall winners will then be decided by a combination of judges’ scores, peer reviewed technical challenges and a public vote, with the two category winners plus the national winner and runner up announced in May.

To enter, plumbers and heating installers should visit www.heatinginstallerawards.co.uk/enter   and fill in the short entry form. Or if you prefer, give the awards team a call on 0161 8711188 and they’d be happy to take your entry over the phone.
