As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Heating Installer Awards, we are excited to announce a major new development for the 2024/25 awards season: the introduction of our brand-new Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees will ensure installers themselves are involved in steering, judging, and continually improving the awards to ensure it remains the premier awards for heating installers to win.

What makes the Heating Installer Awards unique?

Over the past decade, the exceptional work of heating engineers who deliver high technical standards and excellent customer service has been celebrated over and over again.

Now, as part of its commitment to the future of the industry, the organisers are introducing a Board of Trustees, a first in the Awards’ history. This new body will enhance the integrity, fairness and technical rigour of the judging process, ensuring that the Awards continue to evolve in line with industry advancements.

Meet the Heating Installer Awards’ Board of Trustees

The newly formed Board of Trustees comprises previous award winners and industry leaders. These professionals bring practical, hands-on experience and are deeply familiar with the challenges and standards required to excel in their field.

Introducing the 2024/25 Heating Installer Awards Trustees:

Each trustee will be heavily involved in the technical content and judging for the categories relevant to their individual areas of expertise.

  • Phil Metcalf – National Winner 2020

    Phil is the owner of Metcalf Cooling and Heating Services in Lancaster. Phil specialises in the installation of air conditioning, central heating, and heat pumps. Phil was crowned the National Heating Installer 2020 and is a strong advocate for raising industry standards.

  • Nick Irlam – National Winner 2024

    Nick is the owner of Irlam UK, and was awarded the 2024 National Heating Installer Awards winner’s trophy for his outstanding and professional work, with a focus on sustainability. From Bolton-le-Sands, Lancashire, Nick’s projects span design, project

  • Carl Ladd – Rising Star Winner 2021

    Carl Ladd won the Awards’ Rising Star category in 2021. After suffering a serious accident to his hand, Carl rehabilitated his injury and turned to a career in plumbing. Undertaking an apprenticeship and qualifying as a plumber, Carl now works in the renewables sector installing low temperature heating systems with the winner of the Heating Installer Awards’ Most Sustainable Installer 2023, Liam Barry.

  • Huw Jenkins – Regional Winner 2019-2024

    Huw, of Thornhill Plumbing and Heating, is a multiple regional Heating Installer Awards winner, winning his region for the past five years. Huw has been a consistent figure in the Awards since 2018 and a stellar supporter of the Awards for years. Known for holding himself to high standards, Huw has trained others and believes in the importance of passing on the knowledge he gained from his own mentors.

  • Karen Matthews – CIPHE Member

    Karen is a director of Mayfly Group, which provides domestic heating, domestic heat pumps and commercial heating, and hot water installation, service and repair in Leeds and surrounding areas. Karen is a member of The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering and has over 15 years’ experience in the sector.

The Role of the Trustees

The Board of Trustees will play a vital role in shaping the future of the Heating Installer Awards:

  • Judging: Trustees will work alongside our sponsors and technical teams to evaluate entries, ensuring that the judging process is thorough, impartial and reflective of the highest industry standards
  • Technical challenges: Using their real-world experience, trustees will help design challenges that mirror the practical scenarios faced by heating engineers, keeping the competition grounded in reality
  • Mentorship and industry representation: Trustees will mentor rising engineers, and represent the awards at key events such as InstallerSHOW, raising the profile of the awards and further supporting the profession

The Board of Trustees will work with the Awards’ sponsors and technical teams to evaluate entries and ensure the process continues to remain impartial, thorough and reflective of the highest industry standards.

When it comes to the technical challenge, which all finalists must undertake to demonstrate their abilities, the Trustees will use their real-world experience to design and score a challenge that mirrors the practical realities of the job faced by heating engineers.

Finally, they will support rising stars with mentoring and college visits, while also supporting at key trade events such as InstallerSHOW 2025 to help raise the profile of the Awards and further support the profession.

As we celebrate 10 incredible years, the future of the Heating Installer Awards looks brighter than ever, with the guidance of our new Board of Trustees.
