Stelrad Radiators, the leading radiator manufacturer in the UK, has generously provided a number of radiators for an enterprising new community gym and youth hub in Leonard Street, Hull which officially opened on 12th January.

The Peel Project received £32,000 worth of gym equipment from its national partners, Places Leisure and set about providing a facility in Hull that would lead to increasing physical activity to reduce health inequalities in one of the most disadvantaged areas of the city by providing amongst other things, gym sessions to woman and young children, a cheap gym membership for all – starting from just £10 a month and subsidised or free gym membership for the over 55s in the city subject to grants.
The combination of the new facility and the innovative approach offered by the centre is planned to further engage with young people and disadvantaged women as it will contain a youth hub and provide women’s only gym times with free creche and free personal trainer. Also there are proposals for professional health services to be present to engage with residents.
The organisation behind the new facility has taken a lease on premises and have extensively renovated and modernised the dated facility, with set up costs estimated at around £95,000 to include the gym equipment, building materials, paint, new electrics, full heating system, cctv, fire safety system and the cost of skilled tradesmen.

Managing Director Jamal Choudhury says: “We know this facility will change a generation and community positively and address the lack of youth engagement whilst making healthy living available to those who face poverty and significant social barriers in the city.
“It is an exciting and much needed project in an area which lacks community led fitness and youth facilities and where people are disadvantaged. We hope this facility will lead to people who do not partake in physical activity and have barriers to entry to start all kinds of physical exercise and of course having a hub for people to use as a safe place, to help reduce isolation and to begin to socialise, keeping young people off the streets is all part of what we are trying to do here. We are hugely grateful to Stelrad for their support in getting this new facility off the ground.”
Stelrad’s Marketing Director for the UK and Ireland Chris Harvey says: “ We have a good reputation in the industry and in Yorkshire for being supportive of worthy causes and we were delighted to be able to provide a number of our Compact radiators free of charge to this exciting project in Hull, just down the road from our South Yorkshire base in Mexborough.

“The Peel Project is a pioneering community and youth organisation in Hull, led by individuals with lived experiences from diverse ethnic backgrounds. It offers free-to-access grassroots activities, educational workshops, and events. The organisation’s vision is to promote and celebrate meaningful inclusion of people from black and minority ethnic communities in all aspects of civic life within the City of Hull. With a special focus on Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnicities (BAME), it aims to improve lives and build communities. We wholeheartedly support these aims and are delighted to be able to support it in our own small way.”
