Danfoss introduces next-generation range of mechanical radiator thermostats

The new line of thermostats meets the demands of changing legislation and customer needs to deliver the highest energy performance on the market.

The new product range covers both standard liquid and Danfoss’ unique gas thermostats, and pairs well-known features from previous thermostat ranges with new, innovative functionality. According to Henrik Enevold Jensen, Global Launch Manager at Danfoss Climate Solutions, customer feedback played a vital role in developing this new range. “Our installers tell us that they need thermostats that are more intuitive and that give customers audible feedback when they’re adjusting the temperature. We also hear how important design is to the end user, and we’ve taken that into account as well. At the same time, we’ve kept such features as our click-connection, appreciated by installers everywhere for giving them a fast, safe solution when installing thermostats.”

The most accurate room temperature regulation on the market

In April 2021, the EN215 standard put in place new demands for energy performance. The standard contains a control accuracy (CA) classification, which determines the regulation precision of a thermostatic radiator valve. The lower the CA value, the more precise the thermostat keeps the wanted room temperature. Thermostats with a lower CA value help customers avoid overheating and achieve better room comfort. Danfoss’ new thermostat range is EN215 approved and achieves the highest ranking possible –0.2 K– for all variants in the range. “We know how important energy savings and efficiency are for our customers and for our planet,” Hans Erik Larsen, Product Management Director, comments. “And we can definitely say that all our new mechanical thermostats offer the most accurate room temperature regulation and highest energy performance on the market.”

Documented energy savings with gas thermostats

The new range of thermostats includes the Danfoss Aveo™ and Danfoss Aero™, which feature unique gas bellow technology. Research[1] shows that gas thermostats regulate more accurately based on the desired set temperature than liquid thermostats, thereby lowering the amount of energy consumed. This results in up to 2% additionally energy  savings[2] compared to traditional liquid bellows. According to Hans Erik Larsen, “When you translate the 2% savings into a monetary value, calculations show that a typical single-family home in Denmark will save up to EUR 500 over the thermostat’s lifetime. If you apply that calculation to a multi-tenant building – where the number of radiator thermostats increases significantly – the savings amount to thousands of euros per building. Added to that you have the yearly CO2 reduction contributing to the building’s overall energy efficiency. This makes the Aveo™ and Aero™ thermostats a very attractive option for apartment complexes and other multi-tenant buildings”.

To help customers adjust room temperature more precisely, the Danfoss Aveo™ also features tactile temperature setting. When customers adjust the thermostat, it gives a subtle click feeling for every 0.5 °C change in temperature. “We’ve seen campaigns across Europe encouraging homeowners to lower the temperature in their homes by 1 or 2 °C, and lowering the temperature by just 1°C can save 5% in energy consumption,” Hans Erik Larsen says. “This tactile feedback makes it much easier for our customers to control their energy usage by regulating room temperature more precisely.”

Tamper- and theft-proof versions benefit installations in public buildings

The Aveo™ and Aero™ thermostats help customers save money in other areas as well. “The tamper-proof versions of our two, top-range gas thermostats help prevent vandalism,” Henrik Enevold Jensen explains. “They’re very robust and provide extra protection for the thermostats, which is ideal for buildings accessible to the public.” An “anti-theft” plug-in accessory offers additional protection for the Aveo™ and Aero™ thermostats. This small plug-in makes it harder to remove the thermostat, which can only be done using a special tool.

The Aveo™ and Aero™ thermostats also have built-in temperature limitation options so building managers can prevent room occupants from changing the thermostat temperature. “In these times, where many public institutions have lowered the indoor temperature to save money and energy, this feature can help them ensure all thermostats remain at the set temperature. “So now we have all the well-known features and the best control accuracy in an all-white and modern design”, he says.

Meeting installers’ need for quick, safe installation

The new range of thermostats also includes features developed with installers in mind, as Hans Erik Larsen points out. “We’ve taken our unique click-connection feature installers know from our old thermostat range and included it in our new radiator thermostats.” The click-connection enables a fast, safe and tool-free installation. Installers can also use the Danfoss Installer app to access the installation tools and conversion guidance they need. This will make it easier for installers to upgrade to the new thermostat range.

“We introduced our first radiator thermostats in 1943. Now, 80 years later, we’re pleased to introduce this new range of mechanical radiator thermostats, developed in cooperation with our customers and ensuring the highest control accuracy standards throughout the range. We look forward to seeing how these thermostats can help improve energy efficiency and indoor comfort in buildings everywhere,” Hans Erik Larsen concludes.
